CarboFlex Odor Control Dressing is an advanced wound care product manufactured by ConvaTec, engineered to address the complex management challenges associated with malodorous and exudating wounds. This sterile, non-adhesive dressing combines multiple functional layers to provide comprehensive wound management while effectively controlling odor.
Five-Layer Construction:
Layer 1 (Wound Contact): An absorbent wound contact layer containing alginate and hydrocolloid fibers creates an optimal moist wound healing environment while managing exudate absorption.
Layer 2 (Barrier Film): A one-way, water-resistant film delays strikethrough to the carbon layer, prolonging its odor-absorptive properties and maintaining dressing effectiveness.
Layer 3 (Activated Charcoal): A double-knit activated charcoal cloth layer provides highly effective odor absorption, neutralizing malodorous compounds released from wound exudate.
Layer 4 (Absorbent Pad): An additional absorbent pad enhances patient comfort and manages moderate to heavy exudate levels.
Layer 5 (Outer Protection): A smooth, flexible, water-resistant outer film sleeve keeps the internal layers dry and protects against external contamination.
Clinical Indications:
- Malodorous wounds including fungating tumors
- Pressure ulcers with odor management needs
- Infected wounds requiring odor control
- Diabetic foot ulcers with heavy exudate
- Venous leg ulcers
- Surgical wounds with drainage
- Traumatic wounds and skin tears
- Necrotic or sloughy wounds (post-debridement)
Application Guidelines: For shallow wounds, apply CarboFlex directly as a primary dressing. For deeper wounds, use as a secondary dressing over wound fillers or gels. Select a dressing that extends at least 3cm beyond the wound margins to ensure adequate coverage.
Wear Time: Change the dressing when exudate reaches the top layer or when odor is no longer being adequately absorbed. For non-infected wounds, the dressing may remain in place for up to three days, depending on exudate levels.
