Introcan Safety® 3 - Closed Safety IV Catheter (Extended Length)

Introcan Safety® 3 Extended Length by B. Braun is a peripheral intravenous catheter featuring fully automatic passive needlestick protection and multi-access blood control septum with extended catheter length (45mm) for deeper venous access. This closed-system device is specifically designed for patients with difficult venous access, obesity, edema, or those requiring longer catheter dwell times. Protects healthcare workers and patients from blood exposure during insertion and every subsequent access. Used in humanitarian medical settings where standard-length catheters may be insufficient for reliable vascular access.

Key Features:

  • Extended 45mm (1.8") catheter length for deeper vein access
  • Fully automatic passive safety shield activates without manual intervention
  • Multi-access blood control septum prevents blood leakage during insertion and use
  • Integrated stabilization platform with wings improves catheter stability
  • Enhanced ergonomic hub design reduces touch contamination
  • Double flashback technology confirms successful vein entry
  • Universal bevel allows flexible insertion angles
  • Polyurethane catheter material for biocompatibility
  • Proven to extend dwell time compared to standard-length catheters

Specifications:

  • Available gauges: 18G (most common for extended length)
  • Extended length: 45mm (1.8 inches)
  • Material: Polyurethane (PUR)
  • Hub type: Winged for enhanced stabilization
  • Color-coded: Green (18G)
  • Common SKU: 4251131-01 (18G x 45mm)
  • Packaging: 50 units per box
  • Shelf life: 60 months
  • Single-use, sterile device

Contraindications: Do not reuse. Do not use if package is damaged or opened. Not suitable for patients requiring long-term IV access (consider PICC or central line). Use clinical judgment when selecting catheter length based on patient anatomy and venous depth.

Prescription Required: Yes (varies by region)

Safety Notes: Passive safety mechanism automatically shields needle upon withdrawal, preventing needlestick injuries. Complies with TRBA 250 safety standards. Latex-free, DEHP-free, PVC-free. Extended length may reduce risk of catheter dislodgement and mechanical phlebitis. Suitable for subcutaneous infusion therapies and power injector applications up to 325 psi.

Clinical Advantages: Extended length provides improved catheter stability, longer dwell times (up to 5.7 days vs 3.9 days for standard), reduced need for replacement, and better outcomes in patients with challenging venous access including those with obesity, edema, or fragile veins.

Variations Available: Multiple gauge options available. Also available: Introcan Safety 3 Standard Length (19-32mm) for routine peripheral access, Introcan Safety (without blood control), and Introcan Safety Deep Access for maximum dwell time.
